DIY Washing Powder FREE RECIPE
Tired of buying laundry detergents that are filled with chemicals and cost a fortune?
What if we told you that you could make your own washing powder easily? With just a few simple ingredients, you can make your own washing powder that is cost-effective and toxic chemical-free, lessening the harm to your health and the environment.
To make your own washing powder, you will need washing soda, citric acid, soap flakes or bar soap (natural is best), bicarbonate of soda and essential oils of your choice. The washing soda and citric acid work together to remove dirt and stains, while the soap helps to lift them and leave your clothes smelling fresh. Essential oils can be added for a personalised scent.
To make the powder, start by grating the soap into a bowl. You'll need approximately 350gm. You can use any type of soap, but we recommend using a natural soap to avoid any harmful chemicals. Alternatively you can use soap flakes.
Next, add two cups of washing soda, two cups of bicarbonate of soda and half a cup of citric acid to the bowl. Mix the ingredients together until they are well combined. You can also skip this step and blitz all dry ingredients with a food processor.
Next, add your desired essential oils. We recommend using 30-40 drops in total. Personally, we like to mix 10 drops of Bergamot and 30 drops Jasmine. We also like Lavender, Eucalyptus or Tea Tree. Gently mix all ingredients together until the essential oils are evenly combined.
Finally, transfer the mixture to an airtight container and store it in a cool, dry place. We highly recommend our 2L Glass Container that you can purchase HERE.
To use, simply add around 1/3 cup of the powder to your washing machine for a full load of clothes. We like re-using the little plastic scoops that come in the commercial washing powder boxes.
As an added bonus, try using vinegar as a fabric softener for your towels or heavier items. Simply add 1/4 cup white vinegar to the machine when washing heavy items (overuse of vinegar may damage washing machine seals and avoid with sportswear/clothing containing elastic).
Not only is making your own washing powder more cost-effective than buying commercial detergents, but it also allows you to control the ingredients. You can avoid harmful chemicals and fragrances, making it a safer and more eco-friendly option for your home and your skin. Plus, the fresh scent of essential oils will leave your clothes smelling amazing!
